hi all.

my setq'ing of `mail-sources' in .gnus doesn't have any effect at
all.

if I eval the setq form by hand _after_ Gnus has started, then it
works.

seems to be something involving Custom, and I'm completely at a loss
as to what to do with this. I suppose I could tweak `mail-sources'
through Custom but I'd Really Rather Not.

this is with Oort Gnus v0.06 .

Have you looked for suspicious things in .xemacs/custom.el or .emacs?
(look for custom-set-variables)

you should clean up your .gnus, it's grown too large and hairy to be
understandable.
