I've been having problems with v5.8.7, too; my previous version
(updated from cvs on May 10 or so) worked fine. I've now gotten
things working, but I don't know why what I did should have helped.
Here's what I did: I deleted the "default" line from .authinfo. I
used to have
machine math.washington.edu login palmieri password BLAH
default login anonymous password palmieri@math.washington.edu
With the latest version of gnus, it was passing "anonymous" as the
username and "palmieri@math.washington.edu" as the password, and so
the login was failing.
Now I have
machine math.washington.edu login palmieri password BLAH
and it seems to work. Adding "port imap" to the first line didn't
help, either. (In fact, when I did this with the old cvs version, it
stopped working--it started prompting me for my username and
password. Adding it to the end of the single line in my current
.authinfo file doesn't seem to have any effect, good or bad.)
