Thats what I expected... Normally that what happens, too...

For instance, the name appears in a tty as:

Hrvoje Nik~i~

(that is Hrvoje Nik<tilde>i<tilde>)

which is probably correct. It is only footnotes that are incorrect.
X-Windows does show the correct thing, as expected.

To be precise, the first footnote looks like a smaller version of:

Yes.

At least "M-: (featurep 'mule) [enter]" displayed the value "t".
