European Charset

I use a European character set.... How do I get things like french
accents like: é and ç ?

Try iso-accents-mode (`M-x iso-accents-mode', `C-h f
iso-accents-mode').  If you were using X Window System, I think you
could also configure compose-key to your keymap and use that to get
such characters, but that Character Map sounds like a Windows thing
so this probably doesn't apply to your case...

The latter says:

You can customize ISO Accents mode to a particular language
with the command `iso-accents-customize'.

Does anyone know how you then find out what the customization is?

The specific thing I want to figure out is how to make a Polish
ogonek.  I customized iso-accents to latin-2, but now I can't figure
out how to find out the latin-2 keymap.

Probably from x-compose.el.  You have to bind the composition key
somewhere you like.  I like `M-C'; Kai evidently likes `C-x 8'.

(load "x-compose")	; to get ISO 8-bits.
(global-set-key "\M-C" compose-map)

I think you probably need not only the font but the decoding set
correctly.  I got funny characters, but given your normal
transliteration, they are unlikely to be the right funny
characters. (Nik<footnote 1>i<ae ligature><footnote 2>)

I get a right arrow for the first footnote, and a double right arrow
for the second.

Yes, I my XEmacs is compiled for Mule, but no I am not using X-Windows.
I strongly suspect the correct character would appear in X-Windows.

That's weird.  If you have compiled with Mule and are running on a
TTY, you should get a tilde (~) where the Croatian characters should
be.  Is (featurep 'mule) t for you?

Thats what I expected... Normally that what happens, too...

For instance, the name appears in a tty as:

Hrvoje Nik~i~

(that is Hrvoje Nik<tilde>i<tilde>)

which is probably correct. It is only footnotes that are incorrect.
X-Windows does show the correct thing, as expected.

ISO Latin 1 is modeled after an older DEC character set...

Sorry, I use Emacs 20.4 where this is built-in (in the sense of that
key combo being available right after `emacs -q -no-site-file').

In Emacs there is iso-transl :

Try doing C-x 8 C-h.  That should at least give you an idea of what
characters you can use.

Does anyone know of a way to see the actual characters alongside the
keys and bindings?
