The active file entry for the group reads: 911-List 36 11 y The .newsrc file entry reads: 911-List: 1-1006 The .newsrc.eld file entry reads: ("911-List" 3 ((1 . 1006)) nil nil nil) The Group buffer for the group looks like this: % [ 0] 911-List (996) As you can see, Gnus thinks there is 1006 emails in this group, and I am getting some really weird results: New mail is marked 'O' as soon as it arrives, so I have to do a 'L' to read the group. I'm always asked how many mails I wish to see, because Gnus thinks there is so many. I do get the 'new mail' mark. There is nothing customised about the group. I've edited the .newsrc and the .newsrc.eld file, both individually and together but they always reset themselves back to the 1006 figure. Where is it getting the thousand from? Does Gnus use another file to keep track of the numbering, that has become screwed? I have tried ^ and then g, and also Kai's suggestion recently to copy all mails back into the same group. I've also tried nnml-generate-nov-databases, and have searched the big-gnus manual. I'm really stuck. Thanks for your time, and I'm sorry for the length of the mail.
