Evaluating (insert 223) in the *scratch* buffer indeed insert \337. I
don't think I did something special to make in unibyte, but I do have
(require 'iso-transl) and (standard-display-european 1) in my .emacs
buffer (I know the setup should be changed in recent versions, but I'm
lazy).
