Pterodactyl Gnus v0.74
GNU Emacs 20.3.1 (i586-unicent-linux-gnu, X toolkit)
 of Thu Aug 20 1998 on banshee
200 dragonfly.wolfram.com InterNetNews NNRP server INN 1.5.1 17-Dec-1996 ready (posting ok).

xv version 3.10a

With an article selected in the Summary buffer, I type W f. Then xv
opens and displays the following error;

   File '/tmp/xva01078' contains no data. (Zero length file.)

C-h k W f returns:

   W f runs the command gnus-article-display-x-face
      which is an interactive Lisp function.
   (gnus-article-display-x-face &optional INTERACTIVE &rest ARGS)

   Look for an X-Face header and display it if present.

On FSF Emacs and XEmacs without xface support, Gnus runs the programs
uncompface and icontopbm to turn the X-Face: header into an image xv
can handle. Chances are you're missing one or both of those.
