How am I seeing *both* \2xx *and* iso-8859 chars?

But the peculiar problem is that the article displays both real 8859
characters (superscript 1, one-quarter) as well as \223 and \205.

This is correct -- there is no character with code 0205 in
iso-8859-1.  There is in Moft's enhanced version of that charset,
though, but it's not marked as such, so Gnus can't know.

I'm not Lars, but I'll reply anyway.

W d runs the command gnus-article-treat-dumbquotes
   which is an interactive Lisp function.
(gnus-article-treat-dumbquotes &optional INTERACTIVE &rest ARGS)

Translate M******** sm*rtq**t*s into proper text.
Note that this function guesses whether a character is a sm*rtq**t* or
not, so it should only be used interactively.>
