I don't quite understand the problem. Gnus does not
automatically retrieve (I assume this is what you mean
by `sync') new mail. If you press `g' in the *Group*
buffer, Gnus will get new mail and news items.
But you really should use nnimap.

Why not? What is the error message you get when you try to
subscribe?
My settings for running IMAP against an Exchange server are:
(setq gnus-nntp-server nil)
(setq gnus-select-method '(nnimap "your.mailserver.here" (nnimap-stream ssl))))
(setq nnmail-expiry-target "nnimap\+your.mailserver.here:Deleted Items")
(setq gnus-message-archive-group "\"nnimap\+your.mailserver.here:Sent Items\"")
I don't think ssl comes with emacs, but you can find it in
the gnus/contrib directory.

Are you sure that this is what you want? I want to have all
my messages on the Exchange server and then read them with
either Gnus or Outlook (or any other software for that
matter).
