Timeout for closing an nntp-backend?

Hi,

i am searching for the value when Gnus automatically closes the
backend for an nntp connection. There seems to exist such a value,
cause when i M-g in the group buffer the message "Open nntp..."
appears, then when doing the same thing 10 secs later the message
doesn't appear and when doing it 10 min later it reappears.

Gnus never does this.  The server does it.

There is a variable nntp-connection-timeout, but it's intended to
apply when opening a connection.  (If the connection isn't open after
N seconds, then Gnus assumes the server is down or something.)  But
this variable doesn't appear to work on Emacs 20 and XEmacs 21.  Dunno
about Emacs 21.
