Simon's point was that Gnus wanted to encode *his* message as base64 (and that's how I got it) - even though q-p is more efficient for the little bit of Cyrillic ("±ëÛÞ") he put in. (And I'm testing my Pterodactyl Gnus v0.95 for comparison - it wants to do the same thing).
