The symptoms were a bit different here, also I'm using XEmacs 21.2
(not NT emacs) but I had difficulties running pgnus .77 (it failed to
initialize) till I replaced pop3.el(c) from the pgnus distribution
with a pop3.el (newer) version 2.03 from the mail-lib
packages. FWIW...
