I asked the same question recently, and got the same response I'll give you:

For some reason, it appears for a while, then goes away eventually.  I
have no clue why.  I think old .ADAPT files have a weird bit set on
them or something, and eventually it all gets straightened out.

Mysterious.  Lars**2?  Any clues?

`(setq debug-on-error t)', repeat the bug and mail me the resulting

Upgrade to Emacs 20.3.  Pterodactyl Gnus doesn't work with Emacs 20.2.

Many things break in Emacs 20.2, for it is laden with bugs and problems.

Upgrading away from it to 20.3, 19.34, or XEmacs is a good suggestion
no matter what packages one uses.
