I read this group (and several others) using gmane's nntp interface.  If I
have gnus-fetch-old-headers set to 'some, it takes forever to enter a group
-- gnus downloads a few megs of headers.  If I set it to something small,
like 20, I can enter almost instantaneously.

I use the same gnus to read email.  Is there any way to selectively apply
different values of gnus-fetch-old-headers based on the group name/type?

See the variable `gnus-parameters' and (info "(gnus)Group
Parameters").

BTW, please trim your signature to ~4 lines.

Not that I was ever able to get working reliably, I fear, though maybe
that has changed.

I installed, and use, leafnode to resolve that issue.  It is a nice
caching NNTP system that sits between me and GMane and does a fine job
of speeding things up.

Also, for the love of god, please don't warlord!  You signature was
insanely huge, especially the ASCII-art sword.

The problem is that gnus-fetch-old-headers is bypassing the agent.
Even worse, when you set it to 'some, it fetches nearly every header
in the server's NOV database.  I've updated the gnus-fetch-old-header
doc string for now.  I'll put some thought into pulling the logic up
into the agent or the internals.  That way, most of the headers may be
fetched from the local agent files rather than constantly fetching
them from your server.

Thanks, I'll look into that.  This is actually the first time I've seen a
use for group parameters, and I've used gnus for about a decade now!

Oh, come now.  How can I enjoy life if I can't violate the McQuary limit
every once in a while?
