(I have been using CVS gnus and then later git gnus, since 1997, and I currently avoid these files by not using a local file system backend for mail. What will help you, is this, from Adam's message: C-h v mail-source-delete-incoming RET In the help buffer, move the cursor to "customize" and press the RETURN key, in the customize buffer, open the "Value Menu" and choose "Immediately".
