I'm committed to trying this out, if I can find a way that doesn't involve me moving to git emacs. (Currently I'm trying to move your changes to obsolete-gnus as patches, but the path-doctored patches won't apply. I think the problem is that I tried to do this on a windows PC. I will try on my debian computer. (If someone can come up with the proper subtree merge invocations I could try that instead of patches, but manually doctored patches seemed simplest))
