XEmacs compatibility?

When I try to byte-recompile the gnus/lisp directory in XEmacs (21.4
patch 11 for Windows) I get:

XEmacs 21.4 is pre-release code.  The current version of XEmacs is 21.1.14.

I'm going by the FTP repository docs, which still list 21.4 as "Gamma",
with 21.1 as "Current".

Go read <http://www.xemacs.org/>, 21.1.x was retired at least 6 months
ago.  The current stable release of XEmacs is 21.4.13 (web page is yet
to be updated to reflect, it still says 21.4.12).

Go read the two README files on the FTP server (URLs posted previously)
which as of this morning had not been updated.
