During the last couple of days, it occurred several times that when I
tried to enter a "regular" news group in gnus, it *immediately*
(i.e. apparently without trying anything) said "couldn't open
server". Quitting and restarting gnus seems to fix the situation. I
*think* that in all those situations, my news server had been really
unavailable for some time before - could it be that gnus "remembered"
that it could not open the server last time, and didn't even try
again?

Yes. Go to the server buffer and look at the status of the servers
there. The "denied" servers can be un-er-uhm-undenied by pressing
`R'.

I see. What is the "server" buffer? Or rather, how can I go there?
Also, is it possible to modify this behavior on a per-server basis?
Thanks.

`^' in the group buffer.

A thought: it would be nice if Gnus did one of 2 things: either (1)
didn't try to open servers which were denied last time upon pressing
g in the group buffer, but tried nonetheless if asked specifically to
open a particular group, or (2) kept track of last time the server was
really denied, and if that time exceeded a certain amount (e.g. 2
hours or something), reset the "denied" flag. Otherwise, with Gnus
constantly running, I for example now and again have to go to the
server buffer and un-deny my news server (which is not too reliable,
unfortunately)...

Gnus does this. `M-g' on a group will try to activate the group even
if the server was previously denied.

I don't really like "automatic fixes", because the user is usually
more knowledgeable about these things than a program can ever be.
Trying to re-contact a server can be a time-consuming task if the
network connection is wonky.
