WIBNI it was possible to store emailed responses to news postings in
the news group? Gnus can already locally store news postings -- using
the cache. So in principle it ought not to be impossible to locally
store things which were never in the news group.

Whatcha think?

How would you safely allocate a unique article number?

I don't know. Does an article number have to be an integer? Does it
have to be positive? Does this help?

Yes, and yes (unless I've misunderstood something). Negative numbers
are used by Gnus for the invented ghost articles that appear when you
build sparse threads and the ancestors are not available.

Off the top of my head I'd think you could do this if you kept all email
traffic related to group X in a mail group, say nnml:X, then define a
virtual group comprised of both which would be the group you actually
read on a regular basis.

Brian.

And is there a problem with also using negative numbers for
pseudo-cached articles like the ones I'm proposing? Since both kinds
of articles are under Gnus' control, it can make sure that the numbers
don't clash.

Yes, that's true. And as someone else mentioned, nnvirtual has to do
article number re-mapping and you may be able to reuse its code.
