Sending mail with Exchange?

Bleh.

I'm under more pressure these days to change my mail setup so that it
talks to Microsoft Exchange to send mail (yes, there's an SMTP
solution, but the admin isn't keeping aliases up-to-date on the SMTP
server, so I periodically get bounces.)

Doable?

FWIW, I currently use Exim4 to actually do the sending (so that I can
split between work and non-work SMTP servers based on destination
address, another freaking headache), so maybe this is more of an exim4
question, but I know there's been periodic effort to make gnus talk to
Exchange, so I thought I'd start here...

Maybe. But in the meantime, I also discovered DavMail, a proxy that
will turn SMTP into Exchange-speak. It handles iCal syncing too and
theoretically LDAP lookup, though I haven't got that part working yet.

Great, let us know how it works out, especially the calendar sync.  I'll
probably set that up for myself to accomodate my company's "Exchange
uber alles" policy.

Indeed, Norm's twitter tweet on the subject (first hit on "twitter
proxy" on google).

I wish I'd known about this one earlier.  But perhaps it hasn't existed
until now?

Can Gnus be set up to use different SMTP hosts, depending on what host
it's reading mail from?

Ie. can I have two different nnimap servers, with email responses to
messages from the servers, going to two different SMTP servers?

Back in the old days, when I was using a Ubuntu laptop, I did this trick
in the laptop's exim configuration.  But on a windows laptop, the
solution has to be inside Gnus.

That was supposed to be "davmail proxy" (the google search string).

(and he didn't say what the current subject says, I know.  Those are my
words).

But DavMail still looks like something I've looked for, for a long long
time.

Gnus' setup for outgoing smtp servers isn't very easily tweakable (yes
you can do it and yes I have, but...).

I've found using msmtp significantly superior, which sends mail based on
what address you're sending it from.

I use exim4 so that the server used is based on who I'm sending mail
*to*. This means that all users @company.com go through Exchange, but
every else goes through outbound mailhop at dyndns.org, even if there
are a mixture of addresses in a single message.

I used to do that.  Unfortunately, now days many sites reject mail based
on the From address and the fact that it didn't start at what the
@example.com's SPF record should have said it would start from.  Thus, I
had to eventually switch to sending mail through servers based on where
I said I was sending mail from, rather than who I was talking to.  I
tried fighting it for a while, but in the end I didn't win.

That's what I did too.  Ie. base the choice of relay on the From
address, and not the recipients.

(Because trying to base the relay on the receipient, caused bounces)

FWIW, calendar sync seems to work just fine. (Though having colleagues
adding things to my calendar when I'm not looking is taking a little
getting used to.)

I still don't have LDAP worked out, so address lookup doesn't work and
I think this impacts the ability to deal with calendar invites. But I
expect I'll work out the LDAP settings eventually.

What calendar do you use on emacs?  Plain diary?  Or something else?
