Some remarks regarding nnimap

Hello

I've got some general remarks regarding nnimap:

I think there should be a node in the manual about troubleshooting
nnimap, which tells the user which variables to frob and in which
buffers he can look for log informations.

Further on, for quite a good part of nnimap's authentication shemes,
you need external libraries but there is no information on where to
find them. E.g. digest-md5.el is neither distributed with Emacs nor can
it be found on the web (at least by me, perhaps others have better
google carma).

A third issue: Moving some articles between two IMAP folders (on the
same serverr) via process marking them and then saying B m
nnimap+foo:group is really slow, while it's ready almost instantly when
I do it with Sylpheed or mutt. Is there anything I can do about it?

Did you ever realize how much text fits in eighty columns? If you now consider

If I may pile on, I'd like to add another issue: nnimap seems to
almost arbitrarily disconnect, such that every time I check mail it
either needs to reconnect, and sometimes asks me for my password
again, and sometimes doesn't. Perhaps there are some timeout variables
that control this behavior.

On top of that, nnimap often doesn't notice new mail unless I M-g on a
particular group, as opposed to a '1-g' or '2-g' to check groups by
level. I've been having this problem for several years now. Each time
I update to a later Gnus, I hope for a solution. Maybe the problem is
with the IMAP servers.

I saw this issues when I used nnimap with a courier server, too. I'm
currently testing nnimap with a dovecot server, because nnimap with the
courier server was extremely slow, I'll report if they come up there,
too.

Yes, I have this entry in one of my nnimap select methods, culled from
a ding post¹ from June 2002:

  ;; Courier IMAP pre-v1.4.3 is broken (fixed on 2002-02-24)
  (nnimap-retrieve-groups-asynchronous nil))

I would have thought that my ISPs would have moved past this bug by
now. At present, Panix runs a modified Courier 1.5.3, according to the
man pages I found there. I can't figure out what version of Courier
Speakeasy is running.

Unfortunately I can't do much about the IMAP servers my ISPs run, but
I do look forward to hearing of your findings.
