Some time ago (in a mail called "Movemail trouble"), I reported a bug
in pop3.el related to pop3-movemail, emacsNT and a certain pop
server. I fixed the bug by replacing the lines in pop3-send-command:

  line 149: (process-send-string process command)
  line 150: (process-send-string process "\r\n")

With:

  (process-send-string process (concat command "\r\n"))

I don't know why this solved the problem. Someone told me that the bug
was in the NT operation system (or was it emacsNT?) and not in gnus or
pop3. In any case, shouldn't this bugfix be added permanently to pop3
if it doesn't have any side effects?

This change *is* the difference between pop3.el 1.3r and 1.3s. And as far
as I can see it should have no detrimental side effects.

My pgnus0.93 package (downloaded from ftp://quimby.gnus.org/pub/gnus/)
has pop3.el 1.3r in it.

BTW, when I compile gnus-uu.el, I get the error:

make-symbolic-link is not known to be defined.

This looks very much like another NT bug. Including binary attachments
is also *very* slow. I don't know anything about mime, but my theory
is that binary attachments are uu-encoded, which is slow because the
uu-encode code is not compiled. Or am I completely wrong?

Well actually they're base64 encoded which is slow because the base64
encoding/decoding in emacs is slow ....

C-h v base64-encoder-program RET

Adding:

(setq base64-decoder-program "mimencode")
(setq base64-decoder-switches '("-u"))
(setq base64-encoder-program "mimencode")

to my .gnus did the trick under Linux, couldn't tell you what to do
under NT sorry :(

Pushing a tiny bit for `recode' 3.5, now published (:-), I use:

(setq base64-decoder-program "recode"
      base64-decoder-switches '("-f" "/64")
      base64-encoder-program "recode"
      base64-encoder-switches '("-f" "../64"))

Well, grumble-mutter and all that. Lars didn't include the new file in the
tarball. Here's the simple diff for those who want it:

Binaries are base64 encoded, I think. Either way, processing them is slow
largely due to size.

Both the new XEmacs (now) and Emacs (when it gets released, whenever
that may be) have base64 en/decoding in the C layer, which makes
things much, much, much better.
