If I recall (CMIIW) the discussion about this correctly,
@file{.gnus.el} should be used instead of @file{.gnus.el} (unless we
really talk about the one with or without `.el').
But aside from @file{.gnus.el}, there are also lot of places with
"~/": @file{~/.gnus.el} or @file{~/.gnus}.
Unless anybody objects, I will change @file{~/.gnus} and
@file{.gnus.el} to @file{~/.gnus.el}.

[1] See "cvs diff -r 6.377 -r 6.378 gnus.texi". Lot of changes like
this:
-to your @file{.gnus.el} file.
+to your @file{.gnus} file.
