Set the server variable[1] `nnml-get-new-mail' to nil for those
backend that should not receive mail:

,----[ (info "(gnus)Mail Spool") ]
| `nnml-get-new-mail'
|      If non-`nil', `nnml' will read incoming mail.  The default is `t'.
