In Emacs 22, `tool-bar-local-item' looks for (concat "low-color/" icon ".xpm") so if someone would convert the new icons to low-color variants (see etc/image/low-color/ in Emacs 22), we could use those instead of falling back to the retro tool bars. I guess this should be quite easy for someone skilled in using Gimp (maybe automatically).
