Hi,

Emacs 22.2 will be released tomorrow[1]. Soon thereafter we plan to
release Gnus 5.10.10 (from the v5-10 branch) and No Gnus 0.8 (from the
trunk). I don't know the date yet (hopefully on or before the next
week-end), because it depends on Lars' availability.

*Code freeze*

I think we should have a couple of days *without any code changes* on
the v5-10 branch (*doc fixes* are okay) and only include important bug
fixes[2] or doc fixes on the trunk.

Bye, Reiner.

[2] E.g. if my recent changes broke something. ;-) Please test!

Sorry for what's probably a dumb question, but what is "No Gnus", and
how does it differ from "Gnus"? I could barely find mention of it
anywhere on the gnus.org website.

Thanks.

That is the name of the developement version of Gnus.

It contains new features, new bugfixes and maybe some new bugs.

The manual has a node called Gnus Versions, that perhaps clears up
things slightly:

,----
| 10.2.1 Gnus Versions
| --------------------
|
| The first "proper" release of Gnus 5 was done in November 1995 when it
| was included in the Emacs 19.30 distribution (132 (ding) Gnus releases
| plus 15 Gnus 5.0 releases).
|
| In May 1996 the next Gnus generation (aka. "September Gnus" (after 99
| releases)) was released under the name "Gnus 5.2" (40 releases).
|
| On July 28th 1996 work on Red Gnus was begun, and it was released on
| January 25th 1997 (after 84 releases) as "Gnus 5.4" (67 releases).
|
| On September 13th 1997, Quassia Gnus was started and lasted 37
| releases. It was released as "Gnus 5.6" on March 8th 1998 (46
| releases).
|
| Gnus 5.6 begat Pterodactyl Gnus on August 29th 1998 and was released
| as "Gnus 5.8" (after 99 releases and a CVS repository) on December 3rd
| 1999.
|
| On the 26th of October 2000, Oort Gnus was begun and was released as
| Gnus 5.10 on May 1st 2003 (24 releases).
|
| On the January 4th 2004, No Gnus was begun.
|
| If you happen upon a version of Gnus that has a prefixed name -
| "(ding) Gnus", "September Gnus", "Red Gnus", "Quassia Gnus",
| "Pterodactyl Gnus", "Oort Gnus", "No Gnus" - don't panic. Don't let it
| know that you're frightened. Back away. Slowly. Whatever you do,
| don't run. Walk away, calmly, until you're out of its reach. Find a
| proper released version of Gnus and snuggle up to that instead.
|

Would you be so kind to reveal the working download location for those
releases? I'm getting quite confused while chasing links on
http://gnus.org/distribution.html (like Gnus versioning is not confusing
enough by itself :))

For instance, on http://gnus.org/dist/ there is something called ngnus,
is that No Gnus? Where is v0.7, if v0.8 is soon to be released?

Clicking on ftp://ftp.gnus.org/gnus/snapshots/ leads to "550 Failed to
change directory"

And so on... Gnus is so good, it's a shame it's so hard to get it. :)

Yes.

0.7 has not been released, it is the current version in CVS.

As you can see in the dist-directory you found, No Gnus 0.6 is the
latest developement release, from May 1st last year.

If you want the bleeding edge, check out Gnus from CVS as explained on
the Gnus Distribution-page you've already located.

Maybe it is not for you, you sound like you easily get confused.

The version of Gnus are not confusing at all... No, no, no, noooo.

Wow. But what's the reason of releasing 0.8 when 0.7 hasn't been
released yet? Other then more confusion with versions. :)

Or maybe I misunderstood something, nevermind...

OK, thanks.

This actually works now, thanks. I was pulling from CVS at least two
times in the last few months and everytime it stuck when loading with
something like 'mml-secure-verbose not defined'. So I gave up after a
bit of debugging.

>

Only with versioning, yes. It's strange. :)

And even after exclusively using Gnus as my mail/news reader of
preference for a decade, I really think of myself as an Gnus amateur,
mostly because I'm no good at Lisp (close second reason would of course
be that Gnus is sooo powerful). But, I'm persistent and looking forward
to improve in the next ten years, bear with me. :)

No way, dude. It rocks (me out of chair). :)

After some discussion on the list last year[1], we decided to go for
an odd (CVS) / even (release) version numbering scheme:

,----------------------------------------------------------------.
| Standalone | CVS     || No Gnus | CVS   | Date / notes          |
| Gnus vers. | v5-10   ||         | trunk |                       |
| beta rel.  |         || devel   |       |                       |
|------------|---------||---------|-------|-----------------------|
|            | 5.10.8  ||         |       |                       |
|            |         || 0.6     |       | 2007-05-01            |
|            | 5.10.9  ||         | 0.7   | today                 |
| 5.10.10    |         || 0.8     |       | close to Emacs 22.2   |
|            | 5.10.11 ||         | 0.9   | ... thereafter        |
| 5.10.12    |         || 0.10    |       |                       |
|            | 5.10.13 ||         | 0.11  |                       |
`-----------------------------------------------------------------'

I.e. immediately before preparing the tar-balls, I'll bump the version
in v5-10 to 5.10.10 and in the trunk to 0.8. Thereafter, to 5.10.11
(v5-10) and 0.9 (trunk).

Bye, Reiner.

Persons all who didn't oppose that idea. ;-)
I think it's good anyway. It makes it easy to distinguish what
kind of Gnus one uses.

I hope the Exchange IMAP fix is OK. I think it's an important bug fix.
Back it out if you disagree.

I'll wait until after the release to put in more changes to
mail-source.el and auth-source.el, and to make the final addition to
gnus-registry.el (a unified place to set ignored/unfollowed group
status). After that last change I will write the registry
documentation, since AFAIK there are no near-term outstanding
features.[1]

Ted

[1] I want to add cross-server splitting, but that's a Gnus feature so
the registry is only marginally involved and only at the end of it.

The current plan is tomorrow evening (2008-04-10, CEST).

I intend to include new items (compared to the previous release) from
GNUS-NEWS in the announcement text. If you can think of important
changes that should be mentioned, please tell me about it or add it to
GNUS-NEWS (and/or texi/gnus-news.texi on the trunk).

| If you can think of important changes that should be mentioned,
| please tell me about it

Hello. :-)

I wasn't yelling before, because thought my problem is temporary, or
not gnus related, but...

Short summary of the problem: imap login fails 3-4 times from 10 login.

Details:

Using GNU Emacs 22.2.1 and weekly updated gnus cvs head.

Maybe 2-3 weeks ago discovered, that the contrib/ssl.el is obsoleted,
and tried to rewrite my configuration from ssl to tls in this way:

;; IMAP
;;(setq tls-program '("openssl s_client -connect %h:%p -no_ssl2"))
(setq tls-program '("gnutls-cli -p %p %h"))
(setq tls-hostmismatch nil)
(add-to-list 'gnus-secondary-select-methods
             '(nnimap "mail"
                      (nnimap-address "mail")
                      (nnimap-server-port 12345)
                      ;;(nnimap-stream network)
                      (nnimap-stream tls)
                      ;;(nnimap-stream ssl)
                      ;;(nnimap-authenticator login)
                      (nnimap-authenticator cram-md5)
                      (nnimap-list-pattern
                       ("*")
                       )
                      (nnimap-authinfo-file "/home/gzp/.gnussecret")
                      (nnimap-nov-is-evil t)
             )
)

The imap server is dovecot. Since the change randomly getting login
problems, 3-4 times from 10 login. In that case gnus asks for the
password and ask for store it for this session or not.

Found a backup cvs checkout from 20080221, that roll works fine
without any problem. If I switch back to contrib/ssl.el the problem
disappear too with the recent cvs.

I don't know lisp or emacs really, so don't know how to enable debug
or provide more detailed debugging info. Drive me.

The imap server log says only bad login:

2008 Apr  9 09:46:10 <mail.info> mail dovecot: imap-login: Aborted
login (auth failed, 0 attempts): rip=1.2.3.4, lip=5.6.7.8, TLS
[repeated 4 times]
2008 Apr  9 09:46:40 <mail.info> mail dovecot: imap-login:
Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<gzp>, method=CRAM-MD5,
rip=1.2.3.4, lip=5.6.7.8, TLS: Disconnected

As I said, I can't reproduce this with cvs-20080221

Both Gnus 5.10.10 and No Gnus 0.8 don't work with the most recent
Emacs trunk.  See:

Please read contrib/README. If this doesn't help, report the problem
in a separate thread (I won't delay the release because of this).
Thanks.

Bye, Reiner.

It doesn't make any sense to run the _released_ No Gnus 0.8 with Emacs
trunk. Somebody who is willing to use (i.e. *test*) bleeding edge
code of Emacs has to be prepared live with such breakage, go back to
an older checkout or update again as soon as the bugs have been fixed.

For the combination Emacs trunk plus Gnus 5.10.10, the only reasonable
use-case would be that Gnus 5.13 is much more unstable that the rest
of Emacs trunk. I don't think this is true.

Or does someone see other reasonable scenarios?

In short: If you use Emacs trunk, you should use either the bundled
Gnus 5.13 or Gnus trunk (when newer).

OK. It might have been imaginary fears. I felt anxious about
those who have faith in "[DSRQPON].+ Gnus" rather than Gnus and
give a priority to it in `load-path'. Actually the problems
concerning the functionp change happened to such users. But
just now they might have to learn the prefixed Gnusae is not
necessarily newer than the one in Emacs.

Agreed.

Anyway, thank you very much for your release jobs.

We should document this in the manual and in the announcements...

- Gnus 5.10.10 works with Emacs 21 and XEmacs 21.4/21.5. Users of
  Emacs 22 should use Gnus 5.11 bundled with Emacs 22.2. Users of
  Emacs 23 (trunk), shouldn't use Gnus 5.10 at all.

- No Gnus 0.8 works with Emacs 21/22 and XEmacs 21.4/21.5. Users of
  Emacs 23 (trunk), should use either the bundled Gnus 5.13 or Gnus
  trunk (when Gnus trunk is newer).

Bye, Reiner.

I'll start with the release process now. Please don't commit any
changes until the release is out.

In case you find typos in the documentation or similar that should be
fixed, please send it to the list and cc me.

Incidentally, sorry for making changes to auth-source.el close to the
deadline, but AFAIK no one is using it so I thought it was safe.

Thanks for working on the releases :)

Yes, that's what I though about it, too. Else, I would have
complained.  :-)

The tar-balls and diffs are ready and waiting for Lars to pick them up
to gnus.org.

You can now commit as usual again. I bumped the versions in CVS to
5.10.11 (v5-10 = stable branch) and No Gnus 0.9 (trunk).

Bye, Reiner.
