Some remarks:

Richard approved to use the Gnome icons without assignments [1].  I
don't know about the conditions for using other sources (of course we
can't use copyrighted material).  But if we have an assignment, it's
even better.  IIRC there's a dedicated assignment for "artwork" which
would be sufficient for icons, I think.

Adam's work basically was to combine existing Gnome stock icon into a
single icon (CMIIW please, Adam!).  We are on the save side if all
images used in such a combination icon are from Emacs or Gnome, I
think.

Some hours ago, I have committed the icons to Gnus trunk.  Below is a
list.  "#" means "not committed yet", e.g. because name is still under
discussion.  Bill, please let me know if you disagree with any of the
names.  If your interested, I can prepare a tarball with the new
images or you can check them out from CVS (gnus/etc/images/; see
www.gnus.org under "Distribution" for details on CVS access.  But
you'll get all old icons too).
