IMHO, the default of `spam-junk-mailgroups' should be changed to nil.

I tried setting it to nil in .gnus.el, and restarting Gnus, but it
still spam marks unseen articles in my INBOX.SPAM nnimap group.

Perhaps I need a fresh emacs process?

You may have the group marked as a spam group explicitly.  Make sure
of the value of spam-junk-mailgroups with C-h v as well.

Yes, I agree.  It may break some setups, though.  What's the best way
to proceed without affecting too many people?
