Can Gnus be customized to use different From: addresses for messages
sent to different groups ? I tried to set user-mail-address variable
in group parameters but it didn't work.

You can use posting styles for this (see docs for gnus-posting-styles), but
I ended up not liking those because it was hard (if not impossible) to
change them because it ends up throwing the from-header-customization stuff
on message-send-hook, and multiple ones just wouldn't work correctly.
I ended up writing my own, but there are several choices on my.gnus.org for
things like this.

There is a special `address' parameter for the posting styles. Maybe
it works if you use that, rather than the variable user-mail-address.
