Try setting gnus-verbose to something high then tell us what Gnus is
doing all the time.  If you have something in some hook that sorts the
summary by date, for example, that could account for the time -- Gnus
needs a long time to parse all these dates.  Sorting by number is much
faster and pretty much equivalent to sorting by arrival date.
