That should solve all your problems: when you move Mr 128 to another group the file isn't deleted from disk. So, MH will write the next message as 129 and everything will be fine. nnmail-keep-last-article's value is nil Documentation: *If non-nil, nnmail will never delete the last expired article in a directory.
