I hadn't really paid any attention up to here, but this sounds like something I've seen before. What happens when you reopen the group, see the ghosts, and then select any of the ghosts for viewing? In a totally unrelated circumstance (which therefore is probably a symptom of the same bug ;-) I saw the ghost turn yellow on black which indicates canceled messages. What was the letter again? G?
