Maybe the two select methods point to the same directory, and Gnus gets confused if there are files from both (nnml "") and (nnfolder "private") in the directory ~/Mail? I don't quite understand how the directory for (nnfolder "private") is chosen, though. Maybe the name `private' is used as directory name, maybe not.
