How do I disable smily faces in gnus? I looked through
customize->gnus->visual, but there didn't seem an option for this.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Recent versions have a gnus-treat- variable for this. Alas, I don't
know where to find them in the Customize interface. But you can use
`Customize Apropos' to find them.

Shouldn't this be an option? Smilies get annoying in emails with code
patches.

Shouldn't what be an option? The variable gnus-treat-display-smileys
_is_ an option. You can customize it.

Or are you talking about the default value? Well, maybe that should
be set to nil. Another possibility is to set the regexp to the
`nosey' regexp (only grok smilies with noses).

That would help a lot, indeed. Perhaps this should also be
customizable? Say, if gnus-treat-display-smiles is a symbol, it would
get the alist from that symbol, or from the symbol
smile-<gnus-treat-display-smiles>-regexp-alist.

BTW, I've noticed the alists in Oort Gnus v0.02 reference a number of
images I (and it) can't find in the installation directory. Has this
been fixed yet?

Works for me, but I'm running Gnus from the source directory. Dunno
how XEmacs handles this, but I'd guess if you also run Gnus from the
source directory, it should work.

Are you compiling Gnus from the sources, or are you using an XEmacs
package? If the latter, the package might be b0rked.

% ls /n/gnu/xemacs-21.1.14/lib/xemacs/site-lisp/ognus-0.02/etc/smilies/
frown.pbm smile.pbm wry.pbm

And, in fact, these appear to be the only smileys in the current CVS
tree too. Nevertheless, smiley.el refers to a number of other .xbm
files, and doesn't refer at all to the ones in etc/smilies. Looks
like whoever upgraded lisp/smilies.el forgot to import the
corresponding images, so it is totally broken now, unless I point
smiley-data-directory to the directory that comes with XEmacs' smiley
package, which I'd rather not have to do. If gnus comes with
smilies.el, it should also come with the corresponding images, right?

For XEmacs, there is the `etc' tarball. etc-0.27.tar.gz or so on
ftp.gnus.org. Maybe Lars didn't want the Emacs users to have files
they don't need anyway (look at the file date, this was pre Emacs 21).

Yep, but that doesn't make gnus' installation from sources work.

Yeah. Probably time to change this :-)

Anyway, the CVS tree doesn't contain the same smilies that etc does.
Shouldn't it?

These days, I think the smileys should be the same. If XEmacs and
Emacs want different file formats, maybe some magic could be added to
convert them, depending on the `--with-emacs=foo' argument.
