In my scenario, only one machine gets mail. Does that answer your
question?
The syncing was done via rsync:
rsync -avz --delete grossjoh@work:Mail/ ~/Mail/
... and so on. And then there was some voodoo to tell Gnus on the
@work machine to fetch mail and to send it.
