Hm.  Does it really hang or does it just take a long time?  Your setup
looks good.

What happens if you tweak the gnus-read-active-file variable?  Also,
there is a node in the Gnus info file which talks about slow
connections to the news server and slow machines.  Maybe some of the
tips mentioned there are useful for you, as well?
