When composing the article, type C-c C-t to insert the address of the author of the message replying to into the message being composed. To summarize: you read an article in a newsgroup. You type f to compose a followup. While composing, you type C-c C-t. Then you see both the newsgroup and the name of the author of the original message in the headers.
