Do you use scoring on the folder, perhaps inadvertently?  There is
some command which allows you to say "tell me what is the score of
this message and where does the score come from".  `V t', perhaps?

Also, it could be that you've read these messages in another group
(where they got due to crossposting).  There is also an option that
says to mark crossposted "copies" as read.
