Is there a function that will sort an nnfolder by date? Not the
summary, but the actual messages in the file.
I've moved old articles to an nnfolder and for some reason they've
arrived in a seemingly random order. The folder contains a lot of
articles and calling the summary sort-by-date function each time I
read it is really too slow.

You can do it by combining a couple of other functions. First, sort
the group by date. Then, mark all articles with `#' in the order
listed. Then, use `B m' to move the articles into the same group.
After this, the articles will be in date order in the group.

Thanks, but moving the articles in the same group just removed them. I
got them back from the ~ file, opened it as an nndoc folder and copied back
to the group. Et voilà!
