One way is to use total-expire. Normally, only articles marked E are
expirable, but with total-expire on, all read articles are expirable
(K, Y, R, r, ...).
Another way _might_ be to turn on auto-expire. Maybe the expunging
marks the messages E (expirable) when auto-expire is on. (Normally,
C-k marks messages as K (killed), but when auto-expire is on, it
marks them E (expirable).)
