I think gethostname() looks in /etc/hosts, no?

I was proposing to do something else if gethostname() fails.

It is normal for Solaris machines to not have the FQDN in /etc/hosts
or in the NIS database.  Therefore on a typical Solaris machine you
have to ask DNS.
