I vaguely recall that I added special stuff in message-mode to make
sure that in "(foo :-)", the closing paren does not match the opening
paren. Otherwise, messages with smileys will have too many mismatched
parens...
But this isn't working for me, anymore. Have I done something wrong
or has it disappeared from Gnus? If it has disappeared, why? If I've
done something wrong, I'll go look what it was.

GNU/Linux provides a nice `poweroff' command, but where is `poweron'?

It is wrong for me too. I didn't even know it was supposed to work.
Another problem: The sad face :-( looks angry to me. It :-( really
normally used for angry?

I have always used it for "sad" (or maybe "disappointed"), not for
"angry". Maybe we could look in the Jargon file.
Hm. The Jargon file says:
/----
| :-(
| `frowney face' (for sadness, anger, or upset)
\----
Of course, devising a single graphic for this is not easy!
