Folks,
My message-send-hook is set to:
(mime-editor/maybe-translate ispell-message)
My question is: how can I get ispell-message to ignore the MIME
encoding and other parts? I really only want to spell check the main
body of the message.

The first entry sounds as if it comes from TM. Don't use TM with Gnus
5.8+. TM and Gnus try to do the same thing (MIME handling) and step
on each other's toes.
