hi,
i'm running linux 2.0.27 and i've not been able to get gnus or mail
configured so i've decided to download xemacs-20.3-common-mule.tar.gz.
now before i install xemacs, can i or should i get rid of the old emacs
and xemacs that is on the system. and if i should get rid of them, how
do
i go about it.
if you have any other suggestions for the new install, i would sure
appreciate hearing them before i start and mess up something. thank you,
any help will be appreciated.

If you are running a RedHat system, you don't have to de-install XEmacs or
Emacs before. Just upgrade the package with `rpm -Uvh foo.rpm'. I recently
switched to 20.3 and installed these packages:
swa@robot-home:~> rpm -qa | grep xemacs
xemacs-el-20.3-1
xemacs-info-20.3-1
xemacs-20.3-1
swa@robot-home:~> rpm -qa | grep bbdb
bbdb-1.51-2
... and yes, it does not contain MULE. Gnus' beta version, quassia, runs fine
with this particular combination.
cu
Stefan.

Doesn't your Linux distribution have an XEmacs package? It would be
much easier for you to install that -- it will deal with dependencies
among packages and the like.
If you don't want to do that and if you don't mind wasting a bit of
disk space I suggest that you install your xemacs-*-mule.tar.gz in
/usr/local and leave the other installation alone.
Use "./configure --prefix=/usr/local" to prepare the source package to
install in /usr/local.
