when specifying group names, eg. for expiry targets, when matching
them, in alists or whatever, do i need to to give them the backend
prefix (nnfolder:something or nntp:thing instead of just something or
thing)?

It depends. In expiry target, give the full group name. In
nnmail-split-methods, omit the prefix. Dunno about the other cases.
