This sentence has no real meaning. Gnus fetches mail from the places specified in mail-sources and puts it in the nnml groups itself. If you have another program which directly frobs the nnml groups, then you are living very dangerously, and I think finding biff should be the last thing on your agenda -- much later than running away from that danger very quickly.
