gnus-read-active-file vs gnus-check-new-newsgroups

I have deleted settings of gnus-read-active-file and
gnus-check-new-newsgroups from my ~/.gnus file, so
gnus-read-active-file is 'some and gnus-check-new-newsgroups is
'ask-server.

Strangely, when starting Gnus some newsgroups have the correct article
count and some have only `*'.

Here's the data of a `broken' newsgroup:

Strangely, after typing C-c C-c the display of this newsgroup changed
to `nntp+fbi-news:comp.databases.theory'.

What might be the problem?

I have now reverted back to setting gnus-select-method to my nntp
server and gnus-secondary-select-methods to nnml.  The other way round
just wasn't worth the hassle...
