i have problems integrating bbdb-complete-name. What is the name of
the hook to add

(lambda () (local-set-key [(control ?\.)]
				 'bbdb-complete-name))
?.

Also when posting something with german umlauts i am notoriously
asked for a charset. How can i set defaults?

message-mode-hook

May I humbly suggest message-x.el (from
ls6-ftp.cs.uni-dortmund.de:/pub/src/emacs) which allows you to
customize TAB such that it does the right thing in all headers and in
the body. For instance, the default does bbdb-complete-name in To, Cc
and Bcc headers, and message-expand-group in Newsgroups and Gcc.
