I received the following interesting message from Andrew.  It was
created by Gnus, it was read by Gnus -- this shouldn't break.  But it
does.  Of course, the courtesy copy message near the beginning breaks
the whole thing.

I think the courtesy copy stuff should be ported to MML.

FWIW, the news posting copy is fine -- it even includes correct MIME
headers!

Or was this fixed recently, so that Andrew should have used a 5.8.7
snapshot?
