There's something I don't understand with the draft backend: the
default directory for drafts is <gnus dir>/drafts. However, the request-group
function is called with "drafts" as the group value which has the effect of
creating another drafts/ subdirectory.
Is this intentional or is it a bug ?

The other directory is drafts/queue which is for nndraft:queue which
is used with gnus-unplugged. Dunno if Lars is going to add more of
them.
